Progress in Grade 6 Reading EQAO Results

The 'Progress in Grade 6 Reading EQAO Result' indicator is the percentage point increase or decrease since 2015-16 of Grade 6 students who met or exceeded the provincial reading standard (levels 3 and 4) out of the total number of students who fully participated in the assessment.

The data used to calculate the indicator is published by EQAO. Students taking English as a second language programs, English literacy development courses and special needs programs are included in the indicator calculation.

The Grade 6 reading assessments measure how well students have met the provincial expectations outlined in the Ontario curriculum. EQAO uses a four-level scale to report on student achievement. Level 3 has been set as the provincial standard. Levels 1 and 2 indicate achievement below the provincial standard, while level 4 indicates achievement beyond the expected standard.

Parallel versions of the assessments are developed for English- and French-language schools. English as a second language and English literacy development students are provided with special provisions and students with special needs are allowed accommodations to ensure they can participate and demonstrate the full extent of their skills. Reading was selected as the indicator for this report, because effective reading skills are strongly linked to a student's achievement in writing and math.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) annually assesses the reading skills of Ontario's Grade 6 students in publicly funded schools. EQAO is an arm's-length agency of the provincial government and provides parents, teachers and the public with accurate and reliable information about student achievement. EQAO also annually assesses the writing and math skills of Ontario's Grade 6 students.

The assessments are written by students in the spring each year and EQAO normally publishes the results in the fall.
